I wasn’t saying that Tolkein was referring to the church as an institution. I understood his quote to mean the morals of the church. There are a lot of Christian themes and spiritual ideas in Tolkein’s writings.

By “Catholic work,” I hardly believe he was referring to the actual institution at the Vatican. I mean, let’s face it. How engaging would a book be that was based on the institution and not the moral concepts?
