I remember that … I remember that club like it was this morning. But it sucked waiting almost 2 months to receive the LP’s . ‘My Aim is True’ is a true classic. CHEERS!!!
infernozeitgeist, … infernozeitgeist, you put a smile on my face with your comment. It was also the summer after 7th grade when I first heard Elvis Costello. I turned 13 in the summer of ‘78 (July 1st, to be specific) and my older brother had a copy of My Aim Is True on LP record. He also had a REALLY good stereo. This was my favorite in my brother’s collection and one of the few that I later got as a CD when I started buying albums myself. Also new that year: The Cars, Cheap Trick, Meatloaf. Grease is the word!
played this 8 track … played this 8 track for the first time…I played it all the way through and it remained in my 8 track player for the rest of the summer. My intro to Elvis….EPIC !!!
The summer after … The summer after 7th grade I joined a music club (get 8 free albums-buy 3 at reg. price in 2 years). Only music lovers older than 40 will remember these clubs. I had a pick left and chose Elvis Costello- “My Aim is True” as a ‘wild pick’ so to speak. I had ordered 8 tracks, so when they came I literally would click around the tape until I heard a little bit of each song when I got something new. When I
When this album … When this album came out I was in my mid-teens. A lot of the popular music just prior to that was pretty awful (disco, novelty comedy songs, sappy love songs, etc.), but when the likes of Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, The Police, and Blondie appeared on the scene, my eyes – and ears – were opened. I’m happy that such a young person like you is able to find quality music from the past.
is this a CD … is this a CD version? my LP has too much bass and is kinda inaudible in some parts (and its not a mistreated LP either) though it is great for bumpin it really loud
As great as this … As great as this album was, with nothing but gems, this song is its best and I could listen to it 24/7 and never get tired of it. “ELVIS IS KING!!!!!!!!!!” I met him after his performance as special guest at Neil Young’s concert at Irvine Meadows in 2003. He was totally cool, nice, gracious, and he showed total patience with me, a fawning drunken fool, who tried to tell him the impact he’d had on my songwriting, and love of music. The Attractions were incredible, too. Try to see Elvis live.
you know, i’ve … you know, i’ve never delved into early joel. thank you for your thoughtful response. i guess what was going through my head is how Costello has evolved in many interesting directions throughout his career and remained a compelling, intelligent artist and one of the great lyricists, while for me at least Joel created some songs that I just wish I had never heard even once. But his fame must be based on some original quality and you’ve prob. pinpointed it in these early albums. Thanks.
If you listen to … If you listen to Joels 70’s albums like “glass houses” or “the stranger” you will hear a very similiar vocal style.Costello was more raw and direct. But if you like this album you’ll probably like joels output back then too.but I’m thinking you’re basing your comments on the fact you think Costello looks cooler than Joel. And yes,Uptown girl is and has nothing to do with what ‘m saying
