Elvis Presley – GI Blues (1960)

May 29, 2010 - 1:55 am 6 Comments

G.I. Blues is a 1960 Elvis Presley musical motion picture played as a romantic comedy. It was filmed while Presley was fulfilling his military service obligation with the United States Army in West Germany during the height of the Cold War. It was filmed at Paramount’s Hollywood studios and on location in Germany.

U.S. Army Specialist 5 (SP5) Tulsa McLean (Elvis Presley) is a tank crewman with a singing career. Serving with the 3rd Armored “Spearhead” Division in West Germany, McLean dreams of running his own nightclub when he leaves the army, but such dreams don’t come cheap. Tulsa places a bet on his friend Dynamite (Edward Stroll), that he can spend the night with a club dancer named Lili (Juliet Prowse), who is rumored to be hard to get. She turned down one other G.I. operator, Turk (Jeremy Slate). Dynamite and Turk have vied for women before when the two were stationed in Hawaii. When Dynamite gets transferred to Alaska, Tulsa is brought in to take his place. He is not looking forward to it, but in order to keep his money, he must go through with it. McLean uses his Southern charm and calls Lili, “Ma’am.” She at first sees Tulsa as another Occupation Duty GI. Then after a day on the Rhine, Lili begins to fall for McLean. Tulsa’s friend Cookie falls in love, with Lili’s roommate, Tina (Letícia Román) from Italy. In the end, Rick and Marla’s baby son Tiger helps Tulsa win the bet for the outfit—and Lili’s heart. The title track of the movie, written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett, was recorded on April 27th, 1960 at RCA`s Hollywood studios, for initial release on the movie sountrack album.
Elvis was said to be disappointed with the quality of the material he was supplied for the sondtrack, after his favored songwriters Leiber and Stoller pulled out of the running. The public had no such problems, making it his best-selling LP to date—and the highest entry of any Elvis LP, rocketing to #6 in its first week—when it came out in October 1960. The LP sold 700,000 copies and took the coveted #1 spot in the charts—nothing could shift it for 10 weeks. The album remained in the chart for a total of 111 weeks, and went on to sell more than 3.5 million discs.
Producer Hal Wallis flew out to Germany in the summer of 1959, when Elvis still had eight months of his Army service to go, to meet his star and do some location work on Elvis` first movie in two years, at the time known under working title Christmas In Berlin.
Elvis rolled into LA by rail with a pack of buddies on two railway cars hired by the Colonel to start pre-production in late April 1960. Principal photography was completed by June 24th, 1960. At a late stage, Elvis` character name was changed from Tulsa McCauley to Tulsa McLean. In the romantic comedy McLean ( like Elvis ) has Cherokee blood.
G.I. Blues was nominated for two musical-related awards in 1961 : best soundtrack album Grammy, and WGA best-written musical.
