Performed in the movie G. I. Blues; on soundtrack
Recorded: RCA Studios, Hollywood, May 6, 1960
This song was written by Sid Tepper, Roy Bennett, and Aaron Schroeder. Elvis recorded it May 6, 1960 at RCA studios in Hollywood. It is available on the G. I. Blues soundtrack and on Command Performances-The Essential 60s Masters II. This version is from the Command Performances CD. Alternate takes are also available on Silver Screen Stereo and Elvis Close Up.

G. I. Blues was Elvis’s fifth film. It was produced by Hal B. Wallis and was the first of nine Elvis movies to be directed by Norman Taurog. It was released Nov. 23, 1960, and it was the first movie released after Elvis got out of the Army. The movie reached #2 on Variety’s weekly list of top-grossing films; it ranked #14 for the year 1960, grossing $4.3 million the last six weeks of the year. He played Tulsa McLean

While filming G. I. Blues, Elvis played host to the King and Queen of Nepal, the King and Queen of Thailand, and princesses from Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Reportedly, when the movie was shown in Mexico City, it caused a riot, where theater patrons ripped seats and broke windows. The Mexican government banned all future Elvis films.

Three sets of twins played Rick and Marla’s baby in the film.

Scotty Moore and D. J. Fontana can be seen in the Rathskeller (a pub in the film).

This song is from Elvis’ fifth film, G. I. Blues; It was released Nov. 23, 1960 and co-starred Juliet Prowse. It was Elvis’ first film after being released from the Army. Juliet Prowse was engaged to Frank Sinatra, and also dated Elvis. All of Elvis’s scenes were filmed on the Paramount lot with the location shooting being done in West Germany.

G. I. Blues contained 11 songs: What’s She Really Like; G. I. Blues; Doin’ The Best I Can; Blue Suede Shoes (heard on jukebox); Frankfort Special; Shoppin’ Around; Tonight Is So Right For Love; Wooden Heart; Pocketful of Rainbows; Big Boots; and Didja Ever.

Took my little red book
And tore it to bits
Ain’t gonna be
Hey, hey, baby
I really am sold on you
Ooh, ooh, such a pretty little package
I never did see
Gonna wrap you up and take you home with me
I’m thrilled like never before

G.I. Blues is the eleventh album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 2256, in October 1960. Recording sessions took place on April 27 and 28, and May 6, 1960, at RCA Studio C and Radio Recorders in Hollywood, California. The album topped the Billboard Top Pop Album chart and has been certified by the RIAA as a platinum album.

Music on this album comprised songs that had appeared in the film of the same name. The song “Wooden Heart” was released as a single in the United Kingdom, where it was #1 for six weeks. In the United States, Joe Dowell recorded a cover version of “Wooden Heart” that topped the Billboard Hot 100. RCA later released “Wooden Heart” by Presley as the b-side of a single twice, once in 1964 on the back of a reissue of “Blue Christmas,” and again on the flip of a belated issue in 1965 of “Puppet On A String” from the Girl Happy movie. Four songs from this album appear on the 1995 soundtrack compilation: “G.I. Blues,” “Wooden Heart,” “Shoppin’ Around,” and “Doin’ the Best I Can.”

Due to copyright reasons, the European version of the soundtrack album and film substitutes the opening track “Tonight Is So Right for Love” with the song “Tonight’s All Right for Love,” adapted from a melody by 19th century waltz-king Johann Strauss. An American release of “Tonight’s All Right for Love” did not occur until it appeared on the compilation album Elvis: A Legendary Performer Volume 1 in 1974. The version of “Blue Suede Shoes” used on the soundtrack is a new recording of the song Presley first recorded in 1956, and is one of only a few songs that Presley would re-record in a studio setting during his career, others being “Love Letters” and “A Little Less Conversation.”

Good cast, good scripts with real if maybe a little shallow stories, good direction, strong production (Wallis even went to Germany in 1959for location shooting when Elvis was still in the Army). This is Hollywood entertainment at its early 1960ies’ best, no doubt about it and except for probably “Follow That Dream” there’s hardly a comedy that’s so entertaining to watch for fans and non-fans alike.

Elvis was always pretty good in comic roles and scenes. Here he fools his sarge, their relation remains something like a running gag for the rest of the film.
