Who wrote the original "King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table"?
The most definitive version of this epic was Sir Thomas Mallory’s "Le Morte d’Arthur" of the 15th Century. King Arthur was first mentioned briefly a few centuries earlier in three histories as a king of Britain who fought against Saxon invaders, but the tales grew as troubadours told them for a long time. King Arthur (& his 150 Knights of the Round Table) and Charlemagne (& his 12 Paladins) were favorite subjects of "Chansons de Geste". There were "Nine Worthies" called the greatest heroes of history who were the main subjects then: Hector, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Joshua, David, Judas Maccabeus, King Arthur, Charlemagne and Godfrey of Bouillon. Each troubadour had his own songs about these legendary men, and Sir Thomas Malory collected many of the existing tales about King Arthur and organized them into a coherent book. In the 12th century, Geoffrey of Monmouth gave the tale much of its present basic version in his book on "History of the British Kings". Also in the 12th century, Chretien de Troyes added Sir Lancelot and the Holy Grail to the mix. The French tales came to concentrate more upon the Knights of the Round Table, and King Arthur was forced into the background.
